Importance Of Having Antivirus Software

What is a computer virus?

A computer virus is a computer program that can replicate itself and spread from one computer to another. The term "virus" is also commonly referred to other types of malware, including adware and spyware programs that do not have the reproductive ability. A true virus can spread from one computer to another, for example because a user sent it over a network or the Internet, or carried it on a removable medium such as a floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB drive.

Viruses can increase their chances of spreading to other computers by infecting files on a network file system. Once the virus spreads it can cause damage to your files including the operating system files, database files, important documents etc.

What can be done to prevent computers from virus infections?

Many users install anti-virus software that can detect and eliminate known viruses after the computer downloads or runs the executable. There are two common methods that an anti-virus software application uses to detect viruses. The first, and by far the most common method of virus detection is using a list of virus signature definitions. This works by examining the content of the computer's memory and the files stored on fixed or removable drives, and comparing those files against a database of known virus "signatures". The disadvantage of this detection method is that users are only protected from viruses that pre-date their last virus definition update. The second method is to use a heuristic algorithm to find viruses based on common behaviours. This method has the ability to detect novel viruses that anti-virus security firms have yet to create a signature for. Some anti-virus programs are able to scan opened files in addition to sent and received email messages "on the fly" in a similar manner. This practice is known as "real time scanning". Users must update their software regularly to patch security holes. Anti-virus software also needs to be regularly updated in order to recognize the latest threats.

How can CFL help you?

CFL sells NOD32 which is the most awarded anti-virus software on the market today. NOD32 uses the most advanced systems to detect viruses including the signature definitions, heuristic algorithms which can detect viruses based on behaviour before a signature has been released, anti adware and spyware protection as well as real time scanning of opened files and sent and received emails. NOD32 signature files are very small and are released multiple times per day. If you do not have an anti-virus or would like to move to NOD32 please contact CFL office for a quote for your system. CFL will also make sure that your anti-virus is properly configured for use with CFL software and will make sure that your anti-virus does not expire as we get reminders and you do not have to mange it yourself.

What are some of the other advantages of NOD32 anti-virus software?

  • Effective, it is there to protect your system and not to bother you
  • Scalable, from small office / home office one PC to a large business solution
  • Very lean on system resources
  • Cost effective
  • Fast
  • Easy to use
